North East businesses have been learning all about PR and how to get their stories in the press at a recent ‘Bite Size Business Basics’ session sponsored by Darlington Council and Lingfield Point.
Theresa Stinson of CODE Public Relations & Marketing put together 'Captain Sparky’s PR Toolkit' specifically for the event to give businesses the tools to immediately start generating positive publicity for themselves.
Theresa said ‘I know how tough it is out there at the moment, and many companies don’t have huge advertising budgets to spend. The event has been a great success in that several companies that attended have launched PR initiatives’.
Following a tip from the presentation, Andrew Knowles from JAK Print & Design has begun a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of using good quality business cards and launched a competition to find the North East’s best business card. (See the seperate article contained in this newsletter.)
This will generate plenty of good publicity for the company and promote him as an expert in business card design – all for the price of a bit of creative thinking!
Another company that put the toolkit into practice was Barnard Castle’s GlaxoSmithkline. The communications manager who attended the event decided to do more to promote the site locally and organised publicity for a team of GSK employees who undertook some gardening and DIY for a local primary school. The community angle combined with the picture opportunity ensured lots of coverage in the local papers.
