EVENT 3 - 30 September – Supply Chain Opportunities

This breakfast event is being hosted with Tees Valley Engineering Partnership (TVEP). Representatives from Pyreco and Sita will discuss their plans for major investment in the Tees Valley and the potential opportunities for local businesses to become involved. Discussions will cover:

· Details of the proposed projects; and
· Business opportunities that these plans represent for your business.

In addition to major engineering and construction works there will be a wide range of secondary support activities for example catering, stationery, furniture, recruitment services etc which could offer opportunities to many local businesses.

This is undoubtedly an excellent opportunity to establish useful contacts in these major projects.

Pyreco is a UK company that plans to commence construction of a large scale tyre pyrolysis plant in Teesside in 2010. The development, which is currently at the planning stage, will turn used tyres back into carbon black, steel, gas and oil, with no negative environmental implications. This is projected to be an £80m investment and result in 50 permanent jobs based at Wilton.
Tyre pyrolysis involves externally applying heat to tyres in an oxygen free environment, so that the tyres decompose, giving off gas, then oil, leaving a mix of char and steel which is then separated and further refined. The process represents the culmination of a twelve year research and development programme by Metso’s pyro processing pilot plant facility located in Danville, Pennsylvania and will result in a fully operational plant, capable of processing and recycling 60,000 tonnes of tyres per year. Environmentally, Pyreco will help towards the UK’s targets on greenhouse gas reductions through the displacement of hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO2 that would otherwise be created through the production of carbon black, steel and power.

Sita UK is part of the Suez Environment group and employs 5,550 people providing recycling and resource management services. In 2009 it managed more than 9 million tonnes of waste. Headquartered in Maidenhead it operates from 300 locations in the UK. On Teesside it operates one of its three energy form waste plants, generating electricity from domestic waste which has had all the recyclable elements removed. Two lines were constructed in the 1988 and a third line was completed in 2009. The company is now preparing to under go a £30m refurbishment of the original lines and are planning a further £120m expansion to construct a further two lines.
