Story Title

Weaving a Way for People to Understand the Web

A local voluntary organisation is offering classes to help familiarise people with the internet as part of a national campaign.

To mark "Get Online Week", which will run from 30 October to 6 November, Darlington-based eVOLution is offering sessions to anyone in the local community who wishes to gain or develop a knowledge of the internet.

These sessions are held at eVOLution’s office on Church Row in Darlington town centre. Those who attend get the chance to learn about everything from internet shopping and paying bills online – both of which can save people a lot of time and up to £560 a year – to keeping up-to-date with all kinds of news and the various means by which they can stay in touch with friends and family online.

Job-seekers will also be aided in finding work, as many positions are listed online and require confidence in using computers, a skill which eVOLution is offering to those who attend the sessions.

eVOLution’s classes follow the success of the company’s previous "Online Basics" sessions, which were run specifically for pensioners in conjunction with Age UK. The aim of these was to help pensioners build a good knowledge of IT and the internet so that they would be able to manage certain aspects of their daily lives more easily.

Now, as part of "Get Online Week", eVOLution is encouraging anyone of any age in Darlington to start using and enjoying the web.

Karen Grundy, Executive Director of eVOLution, said: "We are delighted to be welcoming everyone of all skill levels to take advantage of our exciting and informative online courses.

"As a UK Online Centre, we’re trying to show how vital the internet can be whilst helping to maximise social inclusion in Darlington. We just want to bring a load of different people from the community together to see the benefits of the internet in simplifying and even enhancing their lives."

eVOLution aims to promote, support and develop the voluntary and community sector in Darlington to bring about positive change in the lives of the people and their communities.
